Governor says problem of transit to Kaliningrad 80% solved

MOSCOW, Jul 14 (PRIME) -- The problem of transit to Russia’s Kaliningrad has been solved by 80%, but it should be solved completely, Governor of the Kaliningrad Region Anton Alikhanov said on Thursday, as broadcasted by Rossiya 1 television channel.

“We hope that… after solving the problem by 80% this month, we should not stop and continue to push to solve it entirely and completely,” he said.

Kaliningrad needs to recover 500,000–700,000 tonnes of annual transit by road, which is still banned, he added.

In June, the Lithuanian railways notified the Kaliningrad railways about termination of transit of some goods, sanctioned by the E.U., since June 18. But on Wednesday, the European Commission issued additional guidance on transit of Russia’s cargoes and recommended against banning railways cargo transit to Kaliningrad.

Alikhanov said that debut railways supplies of cargoes after the ban has been lifted will begin on Thursday or on Friday and that railway deliveries are important for construction materials, including cement and metals.

Development of marine shipments to Kaliningrad will continue, he added.
